I believe that every student is capable of successful learning when they have the proper guidance. I believe that teachers must know their students and how they learn to be able to help them understand material and excel. Teachers should build on top of the knowledge that students already have, helping them understand the connections between what they know and new information. I went to the University of Minnesota to earn my bachelor's degree in anthropology, and then I joined Teach for America, where I have spent the past two years teaching science at the middle school level. I lead the department, and I've put together a curriculum that focuses on helping students embrace STEM fields as well as developing reading and literacy skills. I also earned my masters degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota through an alternative licensure program. One of my biggest drivers as a teacher is to equalize the educational playing field for students of color and from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. When I work with students, I like to build a rapport with them so that I can identify their learning strengths and what they know so I can build on top of that to help them find success.
